Up Cappanale Way Jack Drought 9780578074740 Books

Only if Jack Drought had paraded out an occasional leprechaun or two would he have charmed readers with more old-world schtick in Up Cappanale Way. Tinkers, priests, nuns not sparing the rod with recalcitrant students, a chapter dedicated only to favored dogs living on equal footing with human owners—to say nothing of the real-life Lord and Lady Rosse of Castle Birr with its renowned telescope—they’re all part of Drought’s enticing tale.

Up Cappanale Way Jack Drought 9780578074740 Books Reviews

I really enjoyed Up Cappanale Way. It gave me a tremendous amount of insight into my heritage. Also details a way of life that has disappeared not only in Ireland but around the world. The narrative structure does a fine job detailing the characters and showing the flow of life in and around the town of Birr. Very accessible book even for those not familiar with Ireland or the vernacular of the locals. By the end, you will feel as if you personally know the characters and will understand their love of the land and their age-old traditions.
An entertaining book that reminds us that the happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything, but make the best of everything they have. Although the setting is a very rural area of Offaly, Ireland in the late 1950's, the values that connect the families and characters are much the same as those we had in neighborhoods of San Francisco during the same period. Jack Drought gives the reader a variety of entertaining characters to flavor the book with humor and meaning. The lesson to be learned is a good one. Live kindly, live generously, live not to acquire but to savor and enjoy life. The author and his characters carry this message well and make the book really fun to read.

This book is truly a treasure! Having read a number of books by Irish authors, none have affected me so positively as this book has. Very well-written, with such clear, rich details that one feels as if one is right there on Cappanale Way. It gives a realistic account of a point in time in the life of Elizabeth Kelly's family--and it preserves this history for all of us to share. Irish or not, one can relate to the ups and downs of life in this family, their relationships with one another and their neighbors. The stories are wonderfully told--it's the kind of book you don't want to put down and wish it hadn't ended when you reach the final page. I strongly recommend this book and am hoping to read more from this author--maybe even find out what happens next in Betty's life!

A joy to read and don't look for blazing guns or danger lurking around every corner. The book is about the people of an area in Ireland which many of us are not familiar. Cappanale Way is a part of Birr, a town in central Ireland. It is situated at the meeting of two small rivers which eventually flow into the River Shannon.

The characters are very memorable. Their unique manner of speech can be "heard" from the printed page thanks to the author's phonetic presentation. At the book's end a Glossary of Dialogue is provided.

Life in the town and in the outlying farmland is about picnics, rabbit hunting, fishing and hurling. The period takes place sixty years ago where very few had television or for that matter knew what television was. Life was more about local events and neighbors interacting. The author captures the readers interest in these events and the area where they take place. Awhile after finishing "Up Cappanale Way", I returned to it to reread random chapters for pure pleasure.

I strongly recommend this book to all.
